SCAHILL SELECTS QUEER DOCUMENTARY 'FLEE'
Prof. Scahill was asked by the University of Colorado Denver to recommend a contemporary queer film that deserves more attention. His choice was Flee (2021), the Oscar-nominated documentary by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, now available on Hulu. Flee tells the story of Amin, a queer refugee from Afghanistan, who has never shared his tale of trauma and survival—even keeping it from his partner of many years. The film employs rotoscoping animation (frame-by-frame tracing over live action footage) to protect Amin’s identity, and the style of the animation shifts and transforms in beautiful and haunting ways to tell his story.
