EVENT: FEMINIST HORROR SCREENING AND Q&A
This week, the makers of the psychological horror film CAM visited UC Denver's campus to screen their breathrough film and hold an exclusive Q&A with our students. Screenwriter Isa Mazzei and director Daniel Goldhaber are Colorado natives, and were excited to talk to young Denver filmmmakers about the contemporary film landscape and how to bring their ideas to the screen.
From the producers of Get Out and BlackKklansman, CAM offers a modern perspective on the tech thriller as sexcam worker Alice (Madeline Brewer, The Handmaid's Tale) finds her identity stolen by an uncanny doppelganger. Screenwriter Isa Mazzei draws upon her own experience as a former camgirl, and CAM offers a feminist, cerebral approach to horror that explores the multiple identities that we create online and the terror of losing control.
In the Q&A that followed, Mazzei and Goldhaber discussed how the film came into being from Mazzei's personal experiences as a camgirl, the desire to mobilize and subvert tropes of the horror genre, the place of female labor in Hollywood, and the terror of fractured identities in a postmodern world.
